Do You Enjoy Spending Time Alone?

Everyone is not comfortable being alone because it makes them feel uneasy; they may not be used to silence, or they may feel bored and don’t know what to do with themselves. Some people may feel like they don’t know how to “function” without having a group of people around them.

I, on the other hand, enjoy being alone and doing things alone.  Here are some of my favorite things to do:

  • I tend to go out and run errands (I know, REAL exciting, right)–do grocery shopping, pick up packages from my post office box, going to the library, etc. Right now, I’m at the library (struggling to come up with blog posts to write, LOL) but I turned my chair to face the window so I can watch traffic drive by from the second floor of the library. As I’m out and about, I’m in my head, preoccupied with my own thoughts, but then there are times when I enjoy having pleasant interactions with people.
  • I also like to take short drives. I have a particular route that I like to drive when I want to get out the house; sometimes taking a drive will help me think and clear my head if I’m preoccupied with a problem. Other times if I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll think: “Hmmm…how far does this road go? Maybe I should check it out.” Asking this question has allowed me to explore different neighborhoods or even a nearby state. Sometimes I have found stores that I revisit (“I didn’t know there was a Walmart/Dollar Tree, etc. around here”). Also, when I drive, I like to listen to music or sometimes I will just enjoy the silence. Silence may seem “loud” to some people, but it “sounds” sweet to me.
  • When the weather is warmer, I like to go to the park, listen to the birds chirp, and soak up the sunlight. On a few occasions, I’ve taken my blanket, spread it out on the grass and curled up with a good novel, my Bible, or my journal.
  • I’ve also went to events alone—comedy shows, the symphony, plays; I haven’t been to an interesting play or comedy show in a while and I would love to do that (I just need to make time to do these things).

When everything is quiet and you’re alone, that’s the best time to hear God’s voice. He may give you some encouragement about a difficult situation you’re dealing with, He may remind you to trust Him, or He may bring a song to your spirit so you can start singing it and have joy in your spirit; this is what He’s been doing with me.

There’s nothing wrong with spending time alone; you can get insight and wisdom from God. You can also enjoy your own company, and you don’t have to wait on anyone to enjoy a peaceful moment.

What type of things do you like to do when you spend time alone?

  1. I enjoy spending time alone and I like being alone. I agree that you get wisdom and direction from God. I enjoy reading and cleaning. I am in my sixties. I am in the place where I understand that I won’t die being alone. When I find myself becoming lonely, I reach out.

  2. Since I am retired, I spend my days writing, reading, studying the Bible, blogging, and reading other blogs. I enjoy being “alone” during the day, but I know I’m not really alone because I know that God is always by my side. Sometimes, I get lonely at night because I live alone, but my life is in God’s hands and I will always trust Him. God bless you, Evette! 💕
